We found out what “remote” really means on our trip to Antofagasta de la Sierra Over 230 km away from the next largest village in the highlands of the Andes Be sure to fill up again Antofagasta lies at 3,400 m, is a real “backwater” and actually offers NOTHING. Apart from magnificent nature You should treat yourself to a guide for off-road driving, as orientation is not easy; Even a breakdown at over 4,500 m is not really much fun, as you are completely on your own here. The two off-road classics are the trips to the Galan volcano (highest point of our trip at 5,000m) and the Piedras Pomez (white volcanic rocks made of pumice stone). But the terrain is a gigantic playground for off-road adventures; Too bad that the place offers so little infrastructure (camping, cafes, restaurants); We think the location and its surroundings have real potential;
