Carretera Austral – Dream road to the end of the world (Part 1)

The Carretera Austral is certainly the highlight in the south of Chile. On more than 1200 km, from Puerto Montt to Villa O`Higgins, through Pacific rainforests past fjords to the deep south of Chile. Even today, around half of the route is still unpaved. Please bring two things with you: enough time and good weather. This area is one of the rainiest regions on earth.

The first section of the “Austral” takes us from the town of Puerto Montt along the sea with small ferry passages to Hornopiren. Everything is still very sweet and relaxed. Hornopiren with its many restaurants, campsites and a beautiful national park are definitely worth a visit. The first real highlight, after a 4-hour ferry passage (must be booked in advance ) is the Pumalin National Park. Billionaire Douglas Thompkins (founder of Esprit and Northface) bought huge areas of Pacific rainforest in the 90s rainforest and later gave it back to the state of Chile as a legacy. A beautiful piece of nature!

We continue via the small”town” of Coyhaique, fortunately with a petrol station, to Futaleufu. The epicenter of rafting. What a river.
